St. Vincent Hospital serves the rural area of Lake County and North America’s highest city of Leadville, Colorado. In 1879 the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas opened Leadville’s hospital to care for the hardscrabble miners that were drawn to the community. Now celebrating 139 years, St. Vincent Hospital continues the tradition of caring for the residents and visitors of Lake County and surrounding areas.
Update from Our CEO
No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.
This timeless wisdom still rings true today, even as the quote was coined by this Greek philosopher 2,500 years ago.
Just the other day our USDA finance representative likened the process of bankrolling and building a new hospital to standing in a flowing river. To stay upright you must continually adjust your stance as the river bottom changes with the swift current.
At St. Vincent Hospital, we have become adept at adjusting to accommodate the changing current. And I am grateful to the community, our staff and our board of directors for the commitment to ensuring and delivering quality patient care now and in the future, as we overcome obstacles and meet the opportunities that a new hospital provides to each of us.
In keeping with our river metaphor, it was a watershed moment on July 29, when we signed the USDA finance documents so that construction can commence, at last, to bring many months of planning to fruition.
Although there has been a great deal of behind-the-scenes work from our staff, board, financing partner and architects, I expect more visible signs of construction activity to begin soon.
In the meantime, we are engaged in the process of value engineering. I define this by saying we are evaluating areas where we can reduce expenses and realize efficiencies in the construction process, but not compromise the quality of our new facility.
Our continued shared vision and collaboration are key to our collective success. Please look for regular updates in this e-newsletter, and www.leadvillehospital.org on the process of construction as the new St. Vincent Hospital becomes a reality.
